So where to start and where to begin in this new endeavour of making music and writing about it too. See, I’m a Country fan and I love the genre, the music and all that it brings to the table within a very diluted music market. I think the best place to start is the annual pilgrimage to Country 2 Country in London, thousands upon thousands of people attend this event yearly and this year was no different. Being a Country fan in the UK is tough! We seem to be labelled with the token cliches of cowboy hats, boots and achy breaky heart, but for all of us that attended the event this year we really know that’s just not the case.
I think this first post should focus on the lesser known acts, but certainly not in any less influential. I would go as far to say they are more important than the main acts that played stunning sets over the weekend. See the world of Nashville and Country music seemly run through a group of very talented songwriters and musicians. Let’s take the Little Big Town Hit “Girl Crush”, such a perfect song and huge hit for the group. It’s a huge radio song written by a group of three ladies. Lori Mckenna is one of those ladies, a Boston born mother of 5 and wife to a very supportive husband, she really does know how to write a song.
She came to C2C 2016 with a hit song and huge radio hit and she could have walked from one end of the o2 to the other without being stopped by anyone. A relatively unknown talent on UK shores and without a really huge following she really didn’t know what to expect. She spoke on Thursday evening at the Songwriter sessions about her songs, her writing and her home life. She shed tears as 1500 fans all song “Girl crush” back to her and gave her a huge applause to end a stunning night.
She went from strength to strength over the weekend and gained an army of fans who will all follow her new music and her song writing endeavours.
Myself and my wife actually had the pleasure of meeting this wonderful songwriter and musician at C2C 2016 and we can honestly say after Thursday night at the Songwriters session we cannot wait to see her live again and will definitely be exploring her back catalogue, we suggest you do the same!
We have a Girl Crush.
